A native of Poolesville, Md., Lt. Col. John W. Harman is a graduate of North Carolina State University, earning both a bachelor’s degree in Biology and his Marine Corps commission in 1994.

Harman is an active duty officer assigned to the Deputy Commandant for Installations & Logistics (DC, I&L), Marine Corps Installations Command (MCICOM) as Director of Operations-Defense Policy Review Initiative (DPRI) program and Strategic Planner, focused on developing realignment infrastructure requirements in support of USMC force design and laydown in the Pacific.

Harman has served in numerous operational and staff assignments spanning every level of the Marine Corps from platoon to Headquarters Marine Corps, including all three Marine Expeditionary Forces and within all elements of the Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF). He also served multiple deployed combat tours in support of Operations Enduing Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and Inherent Resolve along with countless exercises across the U.S., Central and Indo-Pacific Commands.
 
His Joint assignments include duty as the Director of Logistics (J4), Joint Task Force 170 (JTF-170), Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Combined Joint Force Land Component Command (CJFLCC) Deputy Sustainment Director (DJ4) in Iraq.

He is a graduate of the Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare School (now Expeditionary Warfare School), the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and the Air Force War College.

Harman is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and commits his off-duty time to supporting volunteer organizations that provide services to the active military and veterans community.
