Rachel Barth

Rachel Barth is a native of Alexandria, Va. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in writing from Johns Hopkins University and her Master's degree in journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.

A journalism veteran, she spent the first 18 years of her career in gaining experience in just about every role within a newsroom, but transitioned from reporting to design when she realized visual storytelling was her true passion. She first worked in community journalism before leading the copy and design desks for the Washington and Baltimore Examiner daily newspapers. She then spent 9 years as a design editor and product designer at Military Times, where she was part of an award-winning redesign of Federal Times.

In her current position as the magazine and creative director for the Military Officers Association of America, she supervises a staff of artists and multimedia journalists in the production of the award-winning monthly Military Officer magazine as well as the creation of visuals for MOAA’s marketing and digital products. She also works with the editing staff to plan the editorial calendar, strategize content and conceptualize stories for the magazine.

She lives in Alexandria, Va., with her husband and two children.

  • Gold Medal winner from the American Society of Business Publication Editors for the redesign of Federal Times
  • In 2018 selected to present the Military Officer redesign at the Association Media and Publishing annual meeting
  • In 2019 was an Excel Award finalist for feature design and Military Officer magazine redesign as well as a finalist for art direction, feature design and video for the prestigious Folio Ozzie awards
