Social media sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter have dramatically and significantly have changed the way job searches are conducted today. To be effective, job-seekers must have a digital persona online that can be seen readily by a perspective employer and their teams of recruiters and talent acquisition professionals.

A recent article by Blake Stilwell at Military.com noted that “being on Facebook at work used to get people in trouble with their boss.” However, in this new digital age, these social sites not only help individuals to grow and expand their network, they may even help them establish their business.

The social networking giant recently created an online portal for the military-veteran community as part of its Boost with Facebook program where small-business owners and entrepreneurs around the world can tap into tools, resources, and training to help their businesses grow and thrive.

As a reminder, when creating your social media image, MOAA’s team of career transition consultants recommends remaining cognizant and staying vigilant to protect your personal and professional reputation. Before posting a picture, liking an article or sharing a comment, ask yourself, “Would I want a current or potential employer to see this?” If the answer is no, step away from the keyboard!

Lastly, even though your digital presence may help you establish some new relationships and grow your network, effective interpersonal communications remain a critical component to achieving personal success and career advancement.
