Sales Tax

  • Statewide: 4.0%
  • Counties can levy an additional sales tax of no more than 5.04%.
  • Current average sales tax (with local tax included): 7.683%
  • Common Exceptions at State Level:
    • Prescription Medicine: Exempt
    • Unprepared Foods: 3% (local)
  • Gasoline Tax: 55.95 cents/gallon (Includes all state, local, and federal taxes)
  • Diesel Fuel Tax: 65.79 cents/gallon (Includes all state, local, and federal taxes)

 

Personal Income Tax

  • Personal Income Tax Rate Range: Six brackets from 1.0% to 5.75% on income greater than $7,000
  • Standard deduction: Single Filing Status: $4,600. Married Filing Jointly: $6,000
  • Personal Exemption Allowance: Single: $2,700. Married: $7,400. Dependent Exemption: $3,000
  • Itemized Deductions Allowed? Yes, subject to limitations.
  • Retirement Income
    • Social Security: Exempt
    • IRAs: May be partially or fully taxable*
    • 401Ks/Defined contribution employer retirement plans: May be partially or fully taxable*
    • Private pensions: May be partially or fully taxable*
    • Public Pensions: Exempt*
  • Military Pay
    • Active Duty Pay: Taxed to the extent included in federal Adjusted Gross Income
    • Military Retirement Pay: HB 1064 exempts $17,500 of military retired pay from state taxes, and another $17,500 for retirees with taxable Georgia earned net income over $17,500.* 
    • Military Disability Pay: Exempt
    • VA Disability Dependency & Indemnity Compensation Benefits: Exempt
    • SBP/SSBP/RCSBP/RSFPP: Taxable at ordinary income tax rates*


* Income tax comments: Up to $35,000 of other retirement income is excluded from taxation for taxpayers between 62 and 64 or disabled; $65,000 for 65 and over. 

 

Property Tax

  • Local municipalities average .92% of the property's assessed value.
  • Calculation of assessed value: 40% of fair market value
  • Relief programs for:
    • Owner-occupied: May be eligible for a $2,000 exemption.
    • Disabled Veterans/Surviving Spouse: Exemption of $60,000; potential for additional sum based on assessed value of home.
    • 62 and over: May be eligible for exemption from taxes for educational purposes of up to $10,000 if earn less than $10,000.
    • 65 and over: May be eligible for exemption of $4,000 of taxes if income is less than $10,000.
    • Floating Inflation-Proof: May limit increase of assessed value if meet requirements and over 62.
    • Surviving Spouse of Peace Officer or Firefighter: Receives full exemption if officer/firefighter killed in the line of duty.
  • Personal Property Tax: Yes. Rates and exemptions vary.
Property Tax Comments: Additional exemptions may be eligible at the county level.
